AOH 1916 Easter

Commemoration

Event Honors the Efforts of Bill Ashe, Andy Finnerty and Jack Caulfield for Their Work

This year’s 1916 Commemoration was a huge success. For 43 years, the Ancient Order of Hibernians has been involved in the production of this event commemorating one of the pivotal events in the Irish struggle for independence.

The reading of Padraig Pearse’s oration at the graveside of O’Donovan Rossa was given impact by Tim Weston of Division 2. Following was the reading of the  "Proclamation of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Ireland, 1916" by County Past President, Daniel Murphy. Division 3’s own Chuck Gildea presented the keynote address. Music was graciously provided by Eamonn and the Ravens. The event, of course, would not have been possible without the hospitality of the Anaheim VFW and the use of their facilities.

The center of the event, however, was owed to Garret O’Doherty who, not only read the Roll of Honor, but gave a bit of impassioned history and the complexity of the relationship between the Irish and the English during the struggles.

All in all, more than 50 people who attended the annual event, got a taste of the struggle that their fathers and fathers’ fathers have endured through the centuries old quest for freedom for their country.

If you could not be there this year, please make plans now to attend one of the premiere events

But Brennan has vowed to make one last bid to remain in the United States together with his American citizen wife. He will make a direct appeal to the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano. Brennan told the Echo in a phone call from prison on Tuesday that the Board of Immigration Appeals had turned down his appeal. Read more….
